About

Aerial view of (most) of the Historic Park in 2004
The combination of the "old" and "new" CourtHouses along with
the Goal,
Stables and
Police residence that make up the
Police Camp area give us the complete
Justice Precinct.
With its 5 heritage listed buildings and wonderful originality this
precinct is believed the most
intact and original in Australia.
Omeo Historical Society manage the Historic Park (Justice Precinct) on
behalf of
East Gippsland Shire. We are all fortunate as this provides the
opportunity for our "Local History" collection to be housed throughout
these buildings.
The "new" courthouse is still an active courthouse with
sittings on two
or three occasions per year.
Omeo was a rough and tough multicultural mining boom town and
was the
centre of the large
Omeo
Shire (1872-1994) which the Society
and its collection seek to
represent. Look at "historic park" link. The
"other places" link
provide
some information on parts of the old shire.
Omeo is THE historic town of the High Country |
